Ransomware Avoidance
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that locks your data and demands a ransom payment to unlock it. Recently, several healthcare organizations have been hit by ransomware, causing major disruptions to their operations.
Ransomware works by blocking your access to your system or files, and attackers will demand a payment—usually in cryptocurrency like Bitcoin—to unlock it. But even if the ransom is paid, there’s no guarantee your files will be restored or remain uncorrupted.
Prevention is key! Protecting yourself and your organization from ransomware is much easier than dealing with an attack. Just follow a few simple best practices to avoid disruption.
Tips avoid Ransomware:
Don’t fall for phishing attempts: An overwhelming majority of ransomware is delivered through phishing emails that contain malicious links and attachments. Never enter your password credentials if asked to by a suspicious email.
Be wary of unexpected attachments: Maintain a healthy level of skepticism before clicking on any email attachments. Ransomware can find its way onto your device and make its way into UHN’s servers when a user unsuspectingly downloads an attachment that contains the malware.
Avoid delaying your computer’s updates. These updates often include updates to antivirus and antimalware software.
Act fast if you suspect infection – If you think your system or device is infected, immediately disconnect from the internet – both wired and wireless. Next, alert the UHN Digital Security Team and/or the Service Desk.
Reminder: It Starts with You! Be sure to participate in the quizzes and phishing simulations that will be taking place throughout the month. Not only will these activities serve as a healthy refresher for cyber security awareness – there are also many fabulous prizes to be won!
